Aquamarine, (name meaning water and sea), is a common gemstone found in many places around the world. It is light blue to green in colour, and from the beryl family of minerals. You will see it used often in jewelry, but is seen in some face care products.
Aquamarine, first named as such in 1677, is found in hydrothermal vents and granite pegmatites (igneous rocks) and has its beautiful colours from trace amounts of iron. Once the granitic magma cools, which can take millions of years, crystals are then formed from the different minerals found within it.

Since it is commonly found, there are many ways geologists mine for aquamarine. Open-pit mining is the most popular way, where it is then taken to be crushed and sorted.
Worn most notably by Queen Elizabeth II, as well as being named the birthstone for the month of March, aquamarine is a popular gemstone, that is subtle as well as affordable.
